Load cycle test method for the assessment of real-life performance of automatically stoked biomass boilers – Manual for test stands

English:
Biomass boilers are highly efficient under laboratory conditions and produce only low emissions. However, dynamic states such as the ignition phase, load changes, but also stand-by phases and re-ignition are not taken into account. The load cycle test was developed so that the behavior of a biomass boiler can be described under real operating conditions. This load cycle method is described in the following manual.

The real driving emissions of an EU stage IV forest harvester were measured four times within five years to monitor long-time emission behaviour. In this period, the harvester worked 7650 h in total, thereof 6300 h with pure rapeseed oil fuel DIN 51605 (R100) and 1350 h with conventional diesel fuel initially. Data analysis according to relevant EU regulation 2017/655 shows that the emission behaviour complies with the legal requirements of exhaust gas stage IV within the five years under consideration.  (14 Seiten)

Article: Combustion characteristics of pure rapeseed oil fuel after injection in a constant volume combustion chamber with a non-road mobile machinery engine solenoid injector

Titelblatt der Publikation

Pure rapeseed oil fuel (R100) according to standard DIN 51605 is a greenhouse gas saving option for the mobility sector. With its high energy density close to diesel fuel, R100 is suitable to operate non-road mobile machinery with a high power demand and long operating time, where electric drives reach their limits. Advantages are indicated for its use in environmentally sensitive areas like agriculture since R100 is highly biodegradable and non-toxic. However, R100 is characterised by differing physical and chemical properties compared to diesel. The objective of the research is to investigate the differences in the ignition and combustion behaviour of R100 compared to diesel fuel (DF). For this purpose, a constant volume combustion chamber is used, which is equipped with a modern solenoid injector for engines of non-road mobile machinery.

Article: Field tests and real-world exhaust gas emissions of a pure rapeseed oil-fuelled harvester in forestry: Testing a solution for combined water, soil, and climate protection

Using pure rapeseed oil fuel (R100) in forest machinery could be a measure that contributes to climate, water, and soil protection in forestry. However, forest machinery that is compatible with R100 is not currently available. The target of this research was to operate forest machinery with R100 in a field-test, to collect and evaluate the operational and real-world emission behaviour and to assess the environmental impact. Therefore, a modern forest harvester was modified to operate with R100 and was monitored from August 2017 until December 2018, under Bavarian working conditions.

Article: Evaluation of pure rapeseed oil as a renewable fuel for agricultural machinery based on emission characteristics and long-term operation behaviour of a fleet of 18 tractors

The usage of locally produced pure rapeseed oil fuel (R100) according to fuel standard DIN 51605 in agricultural machinery can contribute to protecting the climate, water, and soil. Besides economic aspects, uncertainties concerning the long-term operation reliability and limited exhaust emissions of R100-operated agricultural machinery are hindering market entry. Thus, the aim of this research is to evaluate field experiences, such as downtimes and repairs, engine oil quality, and cold start behaviour, over a total period of more than 50,000 operation hours with 18 tractors.  (16 Seiten)

Article: Transfer of agricultural work operation profiles to a tractor test stand for exhaust emission evaluation

Im Artikel „Transfer of agricultural work operation profiles to a tractor test stand for exhaust emission evaluation“ werden neue Erkenntnisse zu den Abgasemissionen bei landwirtschaftlichen Traktorarbeiten vorgestellt.

Exhaust gas emissions of combustion engines can be harmful to the environment, climate, and human health. Hence, emission limits have been increasingly reduced over the last few years, and new dynamic test cycles for test stands have been introduced. Recently, emission legislation was extended by adding testing procedures during real-world operations. The recording of so-called real driving emissions (RDE) with portable emission measurement systems (PEMS) is complex, especially for non-road applications, such as tractors.

TFZ-Kompakt 13: Climate Protection by Rapeseed Fuel Oil

Titelblatt der Publikation

In the booklet TFZ-Kompakt 13 the TFZ scientists of the expert group for resource management bioenergy in Bavaria "ExpRessBio" explain how a greenhouse gas balance is calculated. This is done using the example of regional production of rapeseed oil fuel in Bavaria. They show the parameters and recommendations for a climate-friendly production - from cultivation to oil extraction. They illustrate that the evaluation of the co-product, in this case press cake which replaces soybean meal imports as local protein feed, has a great impact on the result. For agriculture and forestry, regionally produced rapeseed oil fuel offers the opportunity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to provide local protein feed and to generate added value in rural areas. (14 Seiten)

Article: Ignition characteristics of straight vegetable oils in relation to combustion and injection parameters, as well as their fatty acid composition

Titelblatt der Publikation

Veröffentlichung im Peer-Review Journal Fuel Processing Technology: Im Artikel „Ignition characteristics of straight vegetable oils in relation to combustion and injection parameters, as well as their fatty acid composition“ werden grundlegende Erkenntnisse zum Zündverhalten von Pflanzenölen im Vergleich zu Referenzkraftstoffmischungen vorgestellt.

Straight vegetable oils may be a promising alternative to fossil diesel fuel. Fuels to be used in compression ignition engines have to meet several specifications, including the requirement of a certain ignition characteristic. The ignition characteristic is described by the cetane number of a fuel and measured using engine or constant volume combustion chamber device based methods. However, none of these standardized methods is directly applicable for straight vegetable oils. As a result cetane numbers of vegetable oils with the same origin and indicated in literature can vary by several cetane number units.

Article: Effect of fatty acid composition on ignition behavior of straight vegetable oils measured in a constant volume combustion chamber apparatus

Straight vegetable oils attracted attention several times as alternative fuel for mobile machinery. Certain efforts have already been undertaken to enable the usage of the high viscous oils in compression ignition engines. While physical properties are well specified for different kind of oils, only few information is available on the ignition behavior of vegetable oils under modern engine like conditions. Therefore, the ignition behavior of nine different vegetable oils and two oil mixtures was investigated using the Advanced Fuel Ignition Delay Analyser (AFIDA).

ATZ-Article: Real Emissions of a Plant Oil Compatible Tractor

Titelblatt der Publikation

Despite the growing interest in real operating emissions measurement and analysis of modern diesel and rapeseed oil powered tractors have been little studied. Here under real operating and ambient conditions, the emissions vary compared to the measurements on the test bench. Using a portable emissions measurement system (PEMS), TFZ has measured the emissions of a Fendt Vario 724 S4 with a Euro IV engine running on rapeseed oil fuel in accordance with DIN 51605 during ploughing in the field and on the tractor test stand.

Article: Ignition and combustion behaviour of vegetable oils after injection in a constant volume combustion chamber

The ignition and combustion behaviour of vegetable oils to be used as fuel in combustion engines was researched using a constant volume combustion chamber. The chosen vegetable oils were characterised using the two structure indices average number of carbon atoms AC and average number of double bonds ADB. The structure indices were derived from the composition of the analysed fatty acids. The performance of these two structure indices in estimating differences in fuel properties, such as density, net calorific value, elementary composition and surface tension, was shown.
